In the Dojo

Here’s some Dojo etiquette for our new members, and a reminder for everyone else!

Respecting the Dojo (training area)

  • Silent standing bow (rei) when entering or leaving the dojo.
  • Keep your Gi (suit) clean and ironed. Wash it regularly, it’s basic hygiene.
  • Don’t wear any jewellery (rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings etc). If you cannot remove an item of jewellery, make sure it is taped up.
  • Finger/toe nails must be kept short and feet should be kept clean.
  • No swearing, smoking or chewing in the Dojo.
  • Turn off mobile phones and pagers whilst in the Dojo.
  • Don’t stand around chatting before the lesson, use the time to warm up and practice.

Respecting your instructor

  • Listen to your instructor. Don’t talk or cause any other distraction (e.g. stretching, bouncing etc) while the instructor is talking or demonstrating.
  • If you want to ask a question, raise your hand and wait until the instructor sees you.
  • If you have to leave the class, raise your hand and ask the instructor.
  • To re-enter the hall (or if you arrive late) kneel at the back of the class and wait for the instructor to ask you to join in. Bow and enter the back of the class.

Respecting your fellow students

  • Standing bow to your opponent, when pairing up or at the end of a paired up session.
  • Use control, particularly when your partner is not defending (e.g. on a counter punch).
  • Take extra care when paired up with novices and children.
